IT STARTED WITH A TWEET
As the sun faded one Sunday afternoon in late February 2021 Janine found herself pondering the recent events that had been occurring in the highest institutions in Australia.
She was angry at the Morrison government’s handling of the Brittany Higgins allegations and then further angered by the allegations that then Attorney General Christian Porter denied. She was angry at the gut-wrenching stories of horrific sexual violence in schools.
Janine put out a tweet, she thought what if I could get enough women to join her to go to Canberra and to stand, arms linked and their our backs turned to Parliament then together the women of Australia could make a statement, that enough was enough.
What happened was extraordinary, as volunteer leaders around Australia created events in more than 200 towns and cities. 110,000 women and their allies stood up, spoke up and were heard around the world.
